TODAY! Early Opera Company & Christian Curnyn perform live on BBC Radio 3’s #Opera Passion day

As we’re sure you’ve spotted, it’s #OperaPassion day today, with all sorts of operatic schenanigans being broadcast live online from the larger opera companies on BBC Arts and BBC Radio 3.

We’re delighted to have been asked to be part of it too and are performing for a special broadcast of BBC Radio 3 In Tune at c.5.35-6.20pm GMT, for 20 minutes of music and then chat with presenter Sean Rafferty. It is being live broadcast with an audience from the V&A’s highly acclaimed Opera: Passion, Power & Politics exhibition. If you can’t catch it today online here, it will also be available on iPlayer for 30 days.

Counter-tenor Tim Mead & soprano Rowan Pierce join a small ensemble of 8 musicians & Christian Curnyn on harpsichord to perform excerpts from Handel’s Giulio Cesare and Rodelinda. Tim is singing the amazing ‘Va tacito’ aria with horn (Anneke Scott), and they are performing the beautiful duet between Julius Caesar and Cleopatra at the end of the opera ‘Caro! Bella!’.  Tim is also performing ‘Vivi Tiranno’ and Rowan sings ‘Mio caro bene’, both from Rodelinda.

Booking will also soon open for our performance of Handel Giulio Cesare with Tim Mead in the title role, at St John’s Smith Square as part of the London Handel Festival on Wednesday 11 April – a date for your diary!

Please do tweet and add your thoughts here during the day if you get a chance with @earlyopera #OperaPassion & @BBCInTune.

Baroque is not a style of music that has appealed to me before. Yesterday I sat spellbound at performance you gave at the V&A, Tim Meade voice had a purity that I found stunning, wonderful!!
